DMITRI KLEBANOV – String Quartet No. 4
FRANZ SCHUBERT – “Trout” Quintet for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass in A major, op. post. 114 / D. 667 (“Forellenquintett”)
An unusual composition of instruments: piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass and the inclusion of the famous song “Trout” in the work – this was the only request of the “Trout” Quintet’s commissioner, Sylvester Paumgartner, to Franz Schubert. The two met in the summer of 1819, when the composer and his friends visited the summer house of this wealthy music lover in Styria, Austria.
The work, which conveys the sunny atmosphere of summer, was forgotten for a while, published only after the composer's death, and today is considered one of the most important masterpieces of chamber music. The accompaniment of the old years by the "Trout" quintet has long become a beautiful tradition of the State Vilnius Quartet and its friends.
Ukrainian composer Dmitri Klebanov's String Quartet No. 4 is a work reminiscent of the era of Stalinist repressions. Enriched with Ukrainian folklore, the work reveals the unique style of the composer who did not obey the dictates of the regime. A short but powerful (this is how music critics describe this string quartet) work is the composer's dedication to another Ukrainian composer, Mykola Leontovych, who died at the hands of the Soviet secret police. The well-known Christmas melody of M. Leontovychius “Carol of the Bells”, or “Shchedryk” (in Ukrainian), sounds at the beginning of D. Klebanov’s String Quartet.
