Exibition „Jacques Lipchitz & friends“
Last year Jacques Lipchitz came back to Druskininkai for the first time with an exhibition of his works to celebrate the anniversary of M. K. Čiurlionis. The exhibition “We are coming back to Druskininkai!” attracted great interest and requests to repeat it, or at least extend the exhibition period. This year to celebrate his 135th birthday and show his works in “our dear, unforgettable Druskininkai”, Jacques Lipchitz invited all his friends from Paris: Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani, Chaïm Soutine, Georges Rouault, Diego Rivera, Arbit Blatas, Max Band, Théo Tobiasse, Michel Kikoïne, Pinchus Krémègne, Chana Orloff, Léon Bakst, Jules Pascin, Jean Cocteau, Moïse Kisling, Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita, Suzanne Valadon, Ossip Zadkine, Jacques Chapiro. On this occasion, Druskininkai City Museum invites you to the exhibition “Jacques Lipchitz and Friends” of works by the world's most famous artists.
Lipchitz remembers the Paris period, that was not without its difficulties:
“Between 1910 and 1914, Paris was overflowing with foreign artists. I got to know many of them and was very close to some of them. For example, the Spaniards P. Picasso and Juan Gris, the Italian A. Modigliani. M. Chagall came to Paris from Russia in 1910. Among the sculptors were C. Brâncuşi, O. Zadkine and A. Archipenko.” Later with the Mexican artist D. Rivera and M. Jacob and his friends, cubist painters. Then the sculptor was forced to take up odd jobs to make a living. “We, like all the poor people of Montparnasse, used to go to work at the train station. Chaïm Soutine, Ossip Zadkine and I, like the Three Musketeers, would go to work, sing, chat in our native Yiddish, joke and share artistic and life experiences.”
The list of J. Lipchitz’s Parisian friends is supplemented by other celebrities of that time, such as: Coco Chanel, composer Erik Satie. These two legends will also participate in the opening of the exhibition on June 27: the opening event will be filled with the wonderful, soul-harmonizing and healing music of Erik Satie, and the unique aroma of Chanel perfume will wander through the space, which, there is no doubt, will have been scented by at least one visitor to the exhibition.
So we kindly invite you to meet world celebrities on Saturday, June 27, at 3:00 PM and jointly open the exhibition “Jacques Lipchitz and Friends.”
The spirit of Paris is guaranteed!
