“Brasta” – the only solo painting exhibition by Česlovas Petraitis (1946–2022)
The exhibition "BRASTA", the only solo retrospective of the artistic legacy of Česlovas Petraitis (1946–2022), presents paintings from various creative periods of his life.
His work is deeply personal, characterized by an inner vision and a light of the soul. Expressionist abstractions and semi-figurative silhouettes merge and dissolve, as if the canvas were a membrane separating ordinary perception from an inner, visionary realm.
The constant emergence of faces from chaos, the presence of floating animals and ideograms, and the atmospheric dissolution of forms create a cohesive composition—suggesting that the visible world is merely a thin veil draped over a deeper, more mysterious reality. One gets the impression that the artist was guided by the belief that the creative process itself is a means of expressing inner states—states accessible through a form of spiritual practice rather than through conventional language. His creative legacy includes landscapes, still lifes featuring flowers, and portraits, all rendered in an expressionist style. The paintings are executed in oil on canvas and cardboard, while the drawings are created using ink, pastel, and watercolor. Throughout his life, Česlovas created his works with the intention of showcasing them in an exhibition—an event that, unfortunately, did not take place during his lifetime.
